Superior Dumbbell Workout

Dates Back To High School 

Back in high school (in the mid 80's) I was an accomplished wrestler. And I probably would have been even more accomplished if I had trained better in the off-season. Oh well, live and learn. 

You see, in the off season I would lift weights (following a typical bodybuilding type routine) and I ran cross country. Yes, my muscles got bigger and my cardio was pretty good for long term steady-state exercise. BUT THIS TYPE OF TRAINING DID LITTLE TO PREPARE ME FOR WRESTLING! 

The first day of practice, I found out the hard way my off season training was lacking. I was left gasping for breath, lying in pools of sweat and with every muscle in my body screaming in pain. And I thought I was in pretty good shape! 

So, you would think I would have changed my off-season workout routine. But, the fact is, there just wasn't any information on the kind of fitness, strength and conditioning to prepare me for the rigors of wrestling. So, I continued with my bodybuilding style weight training combined with long, slow aerobic exercise. I knew it was a mistake, but I didn't know how to fix it. 

And this mistake in training still bothers me years afterward!

But What Does This Have To Do With
The Superior Dumbbell Workout?

Every time I joined a gym or read a book about training I was faced with the same recommendations. Every program I came across was a variation of the bodybuilding style resistance training, long-slow aerobic exercise combo. But I knew this kind of program would not produce the strength and condition results I wanted. Plus, to make things worse, it didn't even produce the type of physique I wanted!

I wanted the rock-solid, strong, muscular body of an athlete. I wanted to be stronger than I looked. AND, I wanted the heart and lung power to be able to USE my rugged strength more efficiently, for longer periods of time and under a greater amount of circumstances!

Now, I know most of you are not wrestlers. But I think we all share the disappointment of performing some variation of the bodybuilding/aerobic workout program, AND NOT REACHING OUR GOALS! And like me years ago, maybe you just keep doing the bodybuilding/aerobic workout over and again, because you don't know of any other way to train!

Seriously, put some thought into this.

When I started to design my own workouts (unfortunately too late to help with my wrestling), I combined effective weight training exercises in a way that incorporated the heart and lungs as well. I call this Synergy Conditioning.

The goal is to attack the muscles and the heart and lungs together to force improvements on all fronts. This builds more usable full body strength for longer periods of time without fatigue. After all, in a sport like wrestling, you must be strong, but you also must have the heart and lung power to use your strength for as long as possible.

The added bonus is that Synergy Conditioning also creates a lean, muscular physique that turns heads. So, you'e not only strong and well conditioned, but you look great too!

But the idea to use dumbbells exclusively to simultaneously build an athletically muscular body with unmatched cardiorespiratory conditioning only occurred when kettlebell training hit the scene.

Kettlebell Inspired Dumbbell Training

Have you heard about kettlebells yet?

Kettlebells are basically a cast iron ball with a handle. This training tool has been used by Russians and strongmen across the world for centuries. And now, kettlebell training is back in the spotlight.

Kettlebells come in what's called "poods". A pood is an old Russian weight measurement weighing around 16 kilograms, or 35 pounds. Unlike dumbbells, where the next weight up is in smaller increments, to move up in kettlebell training you need to go from 35 pounds to 44 pounds or 53 pounds. This is quite a jump.

Most kettlebell workouts use only one kettlebell or a pair of kettlebells of equal weight. Using only one weight, kettlebells force you to use your imagination and ingenuity to create workout programs to improve the entire body. And the result is spectacular! It is an effective way to use one training device and one weight to simultaneously improve all-around fitness, build a strong, athletic body and burn off unwanted fat.

By using a combination of Slow-Grinding Lifts and Quick-Explosive Lifts, kettlebell training cracked the code of getting a full body workout in a short time while using only one piece of equipment with only one weight measurement.

And the greatest thing is, the commonly held belief you need a room full of expensive equipment, monitors, probes and space age devices to create your best performance body has been shattered forever. The bodybuilding/aerobic workout program ceases to be the only game in town!
